The Pens lost last night to the Caps, 6-5 in a shootout. I watched the entire game, and I gotta tell ya, it was not at all what I expected.
It was a high scoring game, which shocked me, seeing as Crosby, Armstrong, Hall and Roberts were all out, but it was good to see nonetheless. Granted, Olllie the Goalie always plays like crap against the Pens, and he didn't dissappoint in that regard last night, but we have to find a way to not give up 5 goals in regulation.
I think if Ty Conklin had started, he may not have let up those soft goals Sabby did, but in last night's case, I agree with Therrien for staying with him. You can't bench a goalie who pitched a shutout in the team's last game. You gotta give him a shot, so I can't blame him for it.
Malkin played well, as usual, but his two goals and one bone jarring hit on Alex Ovenchkin just wasn't enough. Our boy the Tal-bot also had a goal, but our lack of discipline in the defensive end is not a good sign. We cannot count on scoring like this every night, and, let's face it, the only way we're going to stay atop our division is with good defense and solid goaltending.
Next up for the Pens is the hated Philly Flyers...Time to get it together boys, and Ty, you gotta keep the ship from sinking my man...
In other Pens news, Sid the Kid will be out for 6-8 weeks with his high ankle sprain...That has him returning in March, so let's hope we keep on the right side of the .500 until his comeback...
Until lata, when we post a new Swineburna and possibly a new MMH...

The next game will be the biggest challenge. If the previous meetings this year are any indication. After sweeping them last year, they are out for blood, even tho most of the team from last year is gone. Maybe they can turn it around and put the Flyers in their place!
One of the best parts of this last game was Staal absolutely leveling the big DB, Donald Brashear. Totally made up for the lack of the obligatory BGL-DB throwdown.
Definitely would have had that game had Conklin started. Sid being out will allow Malkin and Staal to step up. We're pretty f'in deep at center. It should raise Staal's value hopefully and we can trade him to get a decent wing. I don't want to lose him, he'll be an all-star, but thats too much talent at one position and for us to go far, we need skill players to compliment Sid
No way we trade Stall, players like him are hard to find. We should go after a winger in free agency, afterall that's how we got Skora.
After watching Geno last night - what a show he and the Big O put on - , we need him to center a line and not skate up and down the Kid's wing. That will be Shero's next big job, to find wingers for Crosby and Malkin. We didn't play D worth a crap, although Danny Boy didn't help the cause much. They have to tighten up. Still, a good game to watch - some good licks, lots of transition and skating - kinda like the old days.
I kinda agree with gary we def need a scoring winger to go with Sid or on the 2nd line, and I dont think that doing it through free agency will cut it... although I would hate to see staal go because of his tremendous upside and we all know about his big stick (no homo) thanks to bob errey shouting it out every 5 minutes... I do trust shero will do the right thing, all his moves thus far have made sense. I am going to let the man behind the curtain do his job and earn his paycheck on this one.
